There
are many reasons why people opt to live in Sheltered
Housing:
Social and life changes have left them living in a house
larger than their needs.
The house and garden are too much now for them to look
after.
They are afraid to live alone.
They seek the security of having a site based Warden (
Scheme Manager).
They seek companionship.
They seek the structured activities of Sheltered Housing.
Their Health worries them.
They lack family support in old age.
Sons/daughters/grandchildren living too far away to offer
support.
Or, they are the last of the line in their family.
Depression.
Social exclusion.
Note it should not be taken that to use a Warden's services
one has to be in daily contact with the Warden and even
those who say they do not need a Warden, probably still
rely upon them for security of the building and repairs and
that the washing machines work and that there are
activities in the communal rooms , and the grass is cut and
the gardens maintained and workmen are escorted ,and
visitors and troublesome residents are not allowed to run
amuck . People often draw comfort from the fact that even
if they do not need the Warden today they wish to have them
there for when things do go wrong and it gives them a sense
of security to know that somebody (perhaps distantly)
watches over them every day
